Homework 4/4/13

1)    Well what makes it substantiate in society with females it shows, a lot of self confidence and a little over exaggerated.. In stanza 2, lines 4-6, it says they fall to her knees and swarm around her. Well in reality men falling to their knees seem alittle over the top. I think it definitely symbolizes a strong confident woman, but when you substitute perfectionism with females on reality; it states in the first stanza, "I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size" which to me states that she still feels phenomenal even when she knows "she's not cute" or models size" she still feels phenomenal.

2)     Angelou uses these repetition phrases like "I'm a woman" "that's me" and in the poem Still I Rise, they express the saying "But still, like dust, I'll rise." or "I rise" in the end of the poem to show a level of confidence where noone or nothing can lower this level of confidence of them. It's saying this is me I'm a phenomenal woman to show how she accepts who she is and is proud of who she is. In Still I Rise It it uses te reputation of  "I'll rise" saying no mater what happens or what you do this person will still do what he/se wants. It's a level of confidence that corporates these two peoms together.

3)    The main point of this poem is no matter of you think of yourself as "cute" or " model size"  are phenomenal no matter what, the poems stating she's a woman, and she's proud of who she is. So that main point is that level of confidence or understanding of you. 

4)   Some literal techniques used in the poem to describe indiviualtiy were self image, confidence, and a lot of personification to describe her individuality as a woman.  

Finished book questions 2/25/13

1) what do you think "the piano lesson" is?

"The piano lesson" can signify many things when it comes down to realizing the
actual meaning. Something's I think the lesson is actually about is never forget your history it makes you, who you are, where you come from. And in the story it explains the two ways on how it an be taken for granted and how the history "should be" remembered. I think keeping the piano because of the huge impact it had on everyone, but also being a huge family airloom it's important to keep your background of where you come from.

2) why did August Wilson choose this title?

I think he chose this title because not only is the piano the biggest subject in the story but the biggest conflict and resemblance of the history. As I explained in question answer 1; it shows how both, berniece and boy Willie, learned their lesson on the piano. We talk about in class how boy Willie finally sees how it is a huge part of their family history but berniece learns how it can be a new start. But I feel a though Wilson only wanted to show the truth on the black history and how people should never forget the real life examples of how the blacks were treated and lived.

3) how does boy Willie come to the understand meant of the importance of the piano?

Boy Willie after seeing his sister sing to her dead ancestors, he realized what this really meant to we. After seeing sitter it only reminded him of how important the family air loom is and how he doesn't need to give that way.

4)what is the significance of berniece calling out to her dead ancestors?

The significance would be her way of showing boy willie her emotions on losing the piano. Her way of showing him the how it keeps the ancestors history there.

5)what purpose does this serve?

The purpose to show the "piano lesson".  The history in all together resembles this piano, and it's basically giving it all away for money when berniece thinks the history of her family and sutter are much more valueable than that.

HW 2/13/13 Piano Lesson Questions

Predict what function the ghosts serve?
From what we've discussed ghosts usually stick around because maybe they have unfinished business, confused, or maybe guide someone. In movies you usually see these lists of things to describe the reasons ghosts "stick around". I predict the ghosts here, like sutter, are a form of guidness or confused. The ghost of the Yellow Dog was the cause of sutters death, but has no signifcance to the story so far.


What is haunting the Charles family metaphorically and literally?
The haunting of the Carles family metphorically is Sutter. Bernice being the only person hes haunting, known as the "victum". He does not visit Boy Willie due to his past history, but weirdly, only visits berniece. Refrences to the Piano would be Boy Willie and Berniece because its a family air loom, that might be keeping the ghost of sutter there. All of the negative history and memories with the piano and now believing sutter is haunting the piano he wants to get rid of it so badly. So literally, Berniece will not get rid of it which might cause issues later in the story.

Identify one example of foreshadowing motif, and symbolism.

Forshadowing: The piano, Boy Willie wants to sell the piano to buy sutters land do live the "white life style".
Motif: The piano is also something brought up very often in the story so far, For some reason keeping Berniece hesitant to get rid of it. Believing its keeping Sutter there.
Symbolism: The piano once again symbolizes the family history, No wonder because its a family airloom. The piano is a huge part of the novel when it comes to symbolism.

First Coding Assignment

Ralph climbed on to the platform carefully. The coarse grass was still worn away where the assembly used to sit: the fragile white conch still gleamed by the polished seat. Ralph sat down in the grass facing the chief's seat and the conch. Piggy knelt at his left, and for a long minute there was silence.

The passage shows the conch and how it symbolizes leadership and civilization for these young boys who are trying to figure out how to survive. The conch is fragile because of the it shows the boys it can be easily broken which can change things for the boys. Slowly realizing how precious this is to the boys.
